What is STEP-UP Colorado?

STEP-UP Colorado stands for Stop Technology Exploiting People: Uniting for Policy Protections in Colorado.  This is a state-wide nonprofit organization advocating for policies and approaches to promote humanity’s best interests in technology use. 

We are a group of Colorado volunteers committed to making systematic change ensuring people–not corporations–control how technologies shape society. This work involves raising awareness of how technology is impacting our community and collectively advocating for societal changes by working with state lawmakers to regulate technology in Colorado. 

To align technology with humanity's best interests through:

• collective action that empowers people to think critically about how we want technology to function in our communities, and 
• advocating for systemic change at the local and state levels in Colorado. 

STEP-UP Colorado envisions a world in which:

• technology is designed to support humanity, not exploit it; 
• technologies are harnessed as tools, not destinies; and 
• people–not corporations–are in control of how technologies shape our societies.  

Evaluate the CO Artificial Intelligence Impact Task Force revisions proposed to SB25-205: Consumer Protections for Artificial Intelligence and advocate for revisions that align technology with humanity’s best interests. 

• Objective 1 (Completed Oct. 2024!): Create this non-profit organization
• Objective 2 (Nov. 2024): Spread awareness of STEP-UP Colorado and build a member base and a mailing list. 
• Objective 3 (Nov. 2024-Feb. 2025): Collectively advocate for revisions to ensure SB25-205 contains regulations that align technology with humanity’s best interests.
  • Tactic 1: Organize and run in-person and online events to raise awareness and discuss technology laws in Colorado. 
  • Tactic 2: Use the mailing list to send out weekly actions members can take to support technology revisions to SB25-205 that align technology with humanity’s best interests. 

Establish state regulation ensuring technology is aligned with humanity’s best interests through a new bill that would change the profit model of social media companies to prioritize people. 

• Objective 1 (Jan.-Feb. 2025): Create awareness and build support for the bill. 
• Objective 2 (Mar. 2025): Draft a bill and get input from experts. 
• Objective 3 (Mar-Aug. 2025): Work with Colorado lawmakers to get the bill passed.
